20 years of pickup truck design progress in one photo

"Okay, so we haven't actually hauled anything in our monster truck. But we MIGHT. There was that one time we had to bring those couple of 2x4s and that tray of marigolds back from the home supply store at the same time, remember? Would have been SO much easier if we had us a pickup truck!"

A great mini doc about how American car companies avoided international competition and regulations by creating a "light truck" segment of vehicles

It's not only pickups. Look at Fiat 500, or mini or vw golf...

My kingdom for a small, EV pickup truck that I can put a cap on.
RIP my first vehicle, a 1980s Ford Courier, held together with bondo.

If it were a food item the situation would be the exact opposite.
I give you the Wagonwheel effect!

cargo capacity(vol.) hasn’t changed as much as the vanity space..
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

I can't believe I haven't noticed how large pickups have gotten
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

Sehr gute Entwicklung! Das, was da, damals, an abnormalen Monstrositäten produziert wurde, war wirklich abnormal. Der kleine Pickup ist da schon ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung. Toll gemacht.

OH BOO HOO LIBERAL CRYBABY PIECE OF FISH LOSER NEVER FELT A WOMAN BABY HOMOS I WILL CONTINUE TO ROLL COAL AT YOUR PROTESTS AND LAUGH WHILE DOING IT

it is entirely ridiculous. @notjustbikes had a great video about this, I am sure you would have seen.

These comparisons are real and valid, and that I've noted myself a lot, but this is an exaggerated example that cheats more than a little.
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

Going to need to start regulating the size of pickup trucks.
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

The way the actual purpose of carrying loads of stuff has barely improved is so funny. Like the carrying space is only sligtly bigger. now it's just a safety hazard.
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

…from which we can infer that pickup truck owner penis sizes have gone down over the past 20 years.
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

Pickup trucks are good but once they added crewcabs, the point of them was lost.
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

And you KNOW the ass hat in the ginormo-truck parks in car slots labelled "Compact cars only".

@estheria Our 1996 farm pickup is on its last legs and I’m dreading this aspect of the replacement process.

(That… and losing stick shift.)

The problem is that the Toyota that used to be a small truck is now bigger than my Ford
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

@asymco Ha, drove across Canada in 1973 with 2 friends in the smaller truck with a camper bed on the back. At a time of gas shocks the old one was much easier to take cross-continent, but the new one would’ve been much more comfortable 🙂
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

Indeed - and you can't blame illusion, perspective, or photoshop for that pic 😀 👏
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

those two aren't similair. One is full size, the other is light truck
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

if you look at the beds you'll notice they actually have the same cargo capacity.
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

cost and waste in a repetition of the 50s. Sad,…, no one has learned.
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

I’m not sure the alt text here is going to help the seeing impaired.
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

Nevermind not being able to see kids over the hood of that thing, would the driver even be able to spot adults? Seriously, can they see pedestrians at all?
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

the sad thing? The bed sizes look the exact same. So, it is not like the increase in overall size did anything for the carrying capacity really.
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

I assume you already saw youtube.com/watch?v=jN7mSXMruE…. This picture is a perfect reminder of what NotJistBikes talks about in that video.
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

how much of this bloat went into the bed. The actual capacity doesn’t seem to be that much larger. Plus it’s so high it’s now hard to access. Damn scary how fast these new trucks can go too.
Als Antwort auf stux⚡

for those who don't know. this isn't because of consumer demand.

This is because the larger the vehicle is in the US the less environmental tax the manufacturers pay (because you want to encourage big 18-wheelers to carry many things instead of many small cars carrying few things) BUT this also means if they make bigger vehicles they may more profit (less tax). Note that the truck got bigger, but not the bed size.

major improvements. Since this is a "pickup" truck, you impress the ladies much more with bigger cab and fully reclining seats so easier to pickup ladies. Also, far less traumatic to drive since you don't see the kids you run over and there is no blood splattered all over the windshield when you hit a kid since they are thrown under the truck. Pretty sure the designers got bonuses for all those improvements 😟

You need the old Tacoma so you can stand in the bed to access the bed of the ford.

LastBoost: The word “progress” is misused here.

I think you’re thinking of “vanity”.

One tows a wheel barrow

The other tows the whole road train.

@leigh The problem is the US tax code. Vehicles over 6000 pounds are deductible as a business expense, lighter ones are not:

taxplanning.com/single-post/ve…

That's why GE is discontinuing the Bolt EV (despite how well it's selling) and replacing it with an SUV.
